I didn't think I'd get hooked on this book. I have read the two Canadian series by Janette Oke and wasn't sure what I'd find. I was in love with the character Josh and his family from the start of the first several lines. The author tells the story of Josh through using seasons and relating them to how the heart (life) is like spring, summer, fall and winter. As always, she has lots of nuggets of wisdom in life and walking in faith. The story of Josh has so many things in it from a time long past that are so great to read about. Though many tough times, Josh and others in the story had so much stamina. There are, through the series, great characters and lesser characters. Wonderful introductions and goodbyes. I've read all four of the books and it's been a few weeks since I finished them. I want to read them again. I'm so glad Janette has written such wonderful books. I especially like this series. It may well be a life-time favorite for me. The books are written in first person. In this first book, Josh is fairly young and his vocabulary is very informal ... how do I explain it? The phrase "just that" is rendered as Josh would speak 'jest thet'. It changes as Josh grows but some words never change, like "crick" for "creek". And I smile as I write that. (I may not be spelling it all out as Janette does, but you get the idea I hope.) I wish I could say more about what I liked and all, but that just gives away too much! (And, as I have been saying in my reviews of her books, Janette seems so much like a friend and mentor, that I call her by her first name sometimes. Thank you Janette!)

My Review
I enjoyed this historical fiction book. The story is told from the point of view of Josh, who is a young man that lives on a farm. Josh was a very likable boy and I fell in love with him and his spirit. Being a young man, Josh faced a lot of uncertainties and was a little bit loss. Thankfully Aunt Lou, Grandpa, Uncle Charlie and later Gramps were there to help him grow and shape him as a young man. I really enjoyed how this story was just about family and how in times of trial, they work together and become stronger. Throughout the book, I could tell how important each member of this family was to the other. I loved that even the men showed emotion and love in tangible ways. Definitely a nice, sweet read and I look forward to reading more in the series.
From a Christian Perspective
This book falls under the Christian fiction genre. Throughout the book, Josh is fighting with God, seeing Him as an enemy rather than an ally. He has that selfish outlook that many of us have when we forget about grace and look at God as only a giver. As I read the book, I recognized some of Josh's struggles as my own. In the end, Preacher Nat helps Josh to find his way to Christ and freedom from all of the anger and hurt. As Josh wept and confessed, he released those burdens that were weighing him down. He finally experienced the rest Jesus told us about in Matthew 1128 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
I received a kindle as a gift for christmas/birthday because I have always loved to read and because I started traveling more and more. I love the kindle that I have. I had an app on my old smart phone because I always wanted to read. While traveling, having my kindle helps kill time during waiting periods, especially during lay overs. I have had some lay overs lasting over 10 hours. Having a plethora of kindle books to choice from is fun when I get ready for a trip. I selected this book in the middle of a binge purchase and I am glad I did!
I enjoy sinking my teeth into a quick read of all types of genres and being able to just stick my head into a different world allows me to escape from the world and any current stress. I love both fiction and non-fiction, allow the world of fiction reads allow you explore a new place without having to go far. I can read through a 300 page book in two days, I love connecting with a story and a character. There is a great joy from completing a good book. I can read while listening to music or even watching tv. I really do not like when someone interrupts me when I read, I can get so engrossed that I do not want to pull out and entertain conversation. The worse is when people want to talk about the book you are trying to read. If you wanted to have a conversation, you would not be reading. I do not understand why people think it is find to just randomly start conversations that are not needed.
I have found that the kindle fad has started to dwindle, but it is a great innovation that I am happy to have because of that access to millions of titles and I look forward to downloading more as I plan more travels and can travel to new worlds in my head before traveling to new lands.
I wanted a nice easy read to sit back and step into another time and this was perfect. By the end of this book I fell in love with this boy and his family. It has hard working people living a simple life on the farm in a small town filled with love. Can't wait for book 2.
