I initially read this in high school and was curious if there was a sequel. So when I saw I could get retired library copies for inexpensive, I jumped at the chance to reread it.

The story is very well written and the world the characters reside in is very well thought out. It can get a little slow at times but the story quickly picks up after. I'm very glad I have my own copy now!

Summary
Starts out with a young woman, Luck (later Firethorn), who leaves society and lives in the woods for a year after her mistress dies. In the woods Luck becomes Firethorn when she eats the berries of the firethorn tree and has visions and the God Ardor permits her to live. When she returns to the town many things have changed. The Blood, basically the royal, are going to war. When the army is gathering she meets Sire Galan and they form a relationship during the celebration of upside down days. What Firethorn thought would end with the upside down days continues and she goes with Sire Galan as his sheath. On their travels, and in the Marchfield where the wait to go to war, Firethorn proves herself to know plants and she becomes a greenwoman healing and helping people.

Feelings
I have been drawn into the world of fiction, my thoughts over flow with the story. I just finished reading Firethorn by Sarah Micklem. The world was different and yet similar to enough that I could imagine visiting and seeing the plants I read about. I am a reader drawn in from the first word and I follow ever step not questioning even though the text may stumble and if I do question it is more for myself my desire to know more, to be come the character which I am reading. Firethorn was easy to love even though she was a tough person in the book. I read and read and still I want the book to continue as the end wasn't really an ending. I have the next book and am waiting to pick it up, yet I want the first book to continue I'm not ready for a second yet. I have to wait for the story to drift out of my mind and stop pestering me before I start the next book.

Firethorn is light fantasy. Not the fantasy where you have to try and beliefs in dragons and time travel, which I have nothing against. I like this kind of fantasy because it is easy to read without questions. Firethorn the main character in the book has been given a gifts by the god of fire, Ardor, after she survives eating the fruit of the firethorn. When she returns from her time in the Kingswood she finds that the kingdom is going to war, and when the troops come through the town she is spotted for her red hair by one of the Blood, descendant of the Gods, and he takes her for his lover, but instead of leaving her in the town he takes her with him. Most of the novel takes place in the Marchfield while they are waiting to go to war across the sea. As there is little physical movement and they never get to war in the story, the book could have easily dragged but it didn't. I did start to feel impatient and want them to leave for war but I never was sorry as the more I read the more I got to know the characters and the more I want to read the next in the series, Wildfire. I have to say that I was really drawn to the cover of Wildfire and would probably not have read Firethorn if I hadn't realized it was a series. I am not sorry that I did though and would recommend the novel. I do think it will appeal more to female as it is in first person and Firethorn is not a female character who would easily be liked by male readers.
Sarah Micklem's `Firethorn' (Bantam Spectra, $14, 383 pages) is a bit of a puzzler.

It is packaged like a fantasy, and begins that way. A young girl in a medieval society runs off to the forest, eats some mysterious berries and is given some minor powers. She returns to her village, and has a fling with a noble, and impulsively follows him off to war.

At this point, I thought Firethorn (for that's her name) might wind up getting dumped by the nobleman (Sire Galan) and then go off to explore the rest of the world that Micklem has so meticulously created -- but that doesn't happen. In fact, `Firethorn', it quickly becomes clear, is basically a love story between Firethorn and Sire Galan, and the various difficulties their love presents, both to themselves and their society.

At that point, the necessity for any fantasy elements at all completely disappear. The book could have just as easily been set in 14th century England, and the same issues (of honor and caste and vengeance and violence) could have been addressed. So in the end, `Firethorn' isn't really a fantasy novel at all, but a medieval love story that's set on another planet for no particular reason.

All that said, I liked `Firethorn,' even though I'm not a major of fan of straight love stories. Firethorn is an interesting character, and Sire Galan is far from the stock romantic hero one would expect from a romance novel. There's also a lot of blood and guts at book's end, which has also been crafted to leave plenty of room for a sequel (or sequels). And straight love story or not, I look forward to volume two.
This is my favorite book, and has been for years. I picked it up off of the shelf because the cover looked interesting, and was blown away. Here are the reasons why I love it

1. Strongly written female protagonist with a consistent voice. She is well rounded, believable, has flaws, and is interesting.

2. Expansive world that feels like it moves on around the story that we are presented. Depth of characters and traditions written that feels real. A wide variety of characters represented, both men and women, with their own lives and interests, their own daily tasks to accomplish.

3. Well written prose that draws you in and makes you want to keep reading, even if you've read before and you know what happens.

4. It is unclear whether there actually are gods meddling in the lives of mortals, or whether the characters interpret events as being god-sent. This is very refreshing in a fantasy novel.

5. The ending. I will write no more because of spoilers.

Give this book a shot.
I've read this book twice and am eagerly waiting for the sequel. Not only is this book well-written, the plot is original and I enjoy the author's gritty realism of what it might have been like to be the girlfriend/camp follower of a soldier on the campaign road. The main character is very intelligent with a lot of spunk. There are frequent sex scenes (and some rape scenes) but they are not the main focus of the book. Highly recommend!

Beautiful, poetic and a true fantasy! Unique author and voice, nothing cliché about this story, cannot wait to read the second installment!
